The PASACAT Philippine Performing Arts Company consists of a choral component known as The Harana Singers. Recently, the Harana Singers have been invited to sing for the San Diego Sea Lions home game and at San Diego’s 3rd Annual World Thalassemia Day.
Starting Friday July 13 for five weeks, PASACAT is going to host complimentary Harana workshops at 6:30pm where our Executive Director, Anamaria Labao Cabato, and Harana Workshop Coordinator, Juliet Sangalang will teach the cultural tradition of Harana and vocal arrangements composed by popular Filipino Artists.
Cabato was an original dancer of PASACAT and expanded her knowledge in Philippine dance theater to include music and song. She was a member of the Sweetwater Choral Ensemble under Laura Rachow, learned to play the bandurria and sing choral pieces of Philippine national artists under the tutelage of Bayani Mendoza De Leon and was a member of the Peace and Harmony Singers from 1987 to 1992. Ana is proud of her heritage and faith, and shares her musical gifts as co-director and pianist for St. Rita’s Folk Choir.
Sangalang is 23 years old and has been a member of PASACAT since 2010. She first joined the Junior Company as a dancer, but her curiosity for music led her to the Rondalla Ensemble. Primarily a violinist, picking up the bandurria felt very natural to her. While learning how to play the instruments of the rondalla, she also continued to hone her musicianship, leadership, and composition skills. She is excited to share her passion for Philippine artistry throughout the Harana Workshop series.
